NDT Group completes Folding Fire Barrier Project onboard HMAS Canberra

NDT Group has enjoyed a busy period in Australia supporting Babcock Australasia with HMAS Canberra’s 5-2 EMP.

As part of its service contract with Babcock to support critical fire safety systems onboard HMAS Canberra and Adelaide, NDT Australia was tasked with delivering an extensive scope of works on HMAS Canberra’s folding fire barriers throughout May and June.

The Royal Australian Navy operates two large amphibious ships, HMAS Canberra and Adelaide. The vessels are designated as Landing Helicopter Docks - or LHDs - and provide a significant amphibious capability.

To meet the seaworthiness requirements of deploying with such a large number of aircraft, HMAS Canberra and Adelaide are fitted with folding fire barriers within the hanger deck. In addition, a second folding fire barrier is fitted on the heavy vehicle deck. These fire barriers are Lloyds-certified and would play a critical role in restricting the spread of fire in the event of an incident or emergency on either deck.

The scope of work incorporated all facets of NDT Group, including mechanical and electrical technicians and support from the company’s robust Australian supply chain network.

Craig Miller, Managing Director of NDT Australia, said: “This project concludes four years of support for the LHD platform’s the subcontractor agreement we signed with Babcock in 2020.

“We are exceptionally proud of the work we have delivered for Babcock ensuring the availability of both HMAS Canberra and Adelaide.

“All of us at NDT Group look forward to working under the Maritime Support Model in the future."
